The Mobile Future: An Article worth to read about flash lite and its importance

The global software maker Adobe Systems has long held a vice-like grip over the fancy end of Web site presentation, thanks to the ubiquity of its Flash animation tools. But a new computing segment is opening up that is forcing Adobe to rapidly change tack.

Some of the points which i like :

“If you look at the traditional developer community, the creative professionals that have used Adobe products for years and years, there is a real interest,” Murarka says. “They are trying to figure out what they should do in mobile. Flash is proving to be three to five times faster for the application and content development than most of the technologies they have used in the past. But I don’t think Flash is a direct competitor for Java, because they solve different needs — Java is meant for a programmer, and Flash is meant for a creative professional.”

“Simpler is better,” Rankine says. “You are almost taking a backwards step in designing for a device that is an nth of the power of what you are used to calling upon when developing web applications. Although in a lot of ways the restriction of the device brings out more creativity in the developer in terms of how they are going to achieve things.

“Certainly usability plays a much larger role in developing applications for the handheld device. Web users have become a lot savvier about applications and how to interact through a browser, whereas with a mobile phone you are dealing with a very basic device that uses a lot of muscle memory with your fingers. So developing applications that are intuitive and easy to use from the very first go is critical to the success or failure of your application. You need to treat the user as a dummy almost in proposing what they need to do to interact with your application.”

“You just can’t get away from the fact that the mobile platform is a fragmented one,” Rankine says. “But Flash reduces the load on porting as a part of the process, because rather than having to port a specific run-time for every handset, we can cover off a vast majority with one installer file. And even being clever about how you code with Flash means you can develop content that plays on a variety of screen dimensions without having to recode the entire application from scratch.

“It would be ideal to have the ‘create once, play anywhere’ ubiquity that you have on the web, but it’s a completely different playing field with the hardware that is involved in the industry.”

Its really a good article!!

Interactive Festival Timetable : flash lite 2.1 application

Interactive Festival Timetable

Mattbooy released Interactive Festival Timetable, a flash lite 2.1 application.

The Interactive Festival Timetable (or IFT) is an application for your phone intended as a replacement for the traditional paper timetable.

Features:

See What Band Is Currently Playing
The application uses the internal phone clock to highlight the bands currently playing. You can quickly change between stages to check out all the current bands performing.
Select Your Favourites
You can highlight the bands you wish to see throughout the day much the same as using a highlighter on a traditional timetable. These bands are also added to “MY TIMETABLE” so you can quickly see a running order of your day. The application saves any selections you make so you can plan your day in advance.
Set Reminders
The phone will vibrate 5 minutes before any band added to “MY TIMETABLE” is about to hit the stage. This reminder means you’ll never miss a band again!
Online Functionality
Go online and select the timetable you need. If the festival doesn’t yet have a timetable - you can easily create your own timetable by modifying the xml file.
Convenience
Backlit mobile screen enables you to read the timetable when the sun goes down.

I haven’t tested this application but like features like backlit, reminder etc. its cool :).

FlashLite 2.1 Launcher for Series 60 2nd edition

Abdul modified Leonardo Risuleo to work on Series 60 2nd edition (not tested on all). Also added functionality where SWF would be opened after some delay, because FlashLite player takes around 6-7 seconds to show splash-animation.

You can download the source.  You would need Carbide.C++, if you want to compile without doing much.

Thanks Abdul for sharing this with us :)

Handango Partners with Adobe to Deliver Flash Lite Content for Mobile Subscribers with Nokia Devices

Handango, the world’s leading provider of smartphone content, is extending the reach of applications developed using Adobe’s Flash Lite technology by being one of the first global mobile content retailers to make available a content catalog dedicated to Nokia devices pre-loaded with Adobe Flash Lite. More than 30 Nokia models based on S60 and other platforms already include the Flash Lite Player, allowing millions of customers to access the robust applications offered in the new dedicated Flash Lite catalog.

“By working with the smartphone content provider community early on, Handango is providing a scalable way to market Flash Lite applications directly to consumers,” said Randy Eisenman, chief executive officer of Handango. “Now, Flash Lite developers can reach millions of consumers who otherwise may not have known about their products.”

“The level of interactivity that Flash Lite enables has changed the way consumers experience applications and content on mobile devices,” said Doug MacMillan, head of business development, Forum Nokia/Americas. “By joining with Handango and Adobe in this important initiative, we will enable our customers to enjoy some of the most advanced and compelling mobile content available. :)

Citizen W700 Bluetooth Watch alerts you of incoming calls

W700 Bluetooth watch

Great idea from Citizen, their new W700 Bluetooth watch gives you an alert if your phone is ringing. And it tells you who’s calling via your phone’s caller ID. IF you get to far away from your phone the watch lets you know, and this is a nice loss prevention tool. It also charges wirelessly for a battery life of about 5 days when fully charged. Available in mid-March (in Japan at least), but no price announced. via

3 Little Words : new flash lite game released by chatebot

chatebot

“A great teaser game. This word grid challenge is very addictive. You will only get a clue as to what the three words are within the grid. This makes finding the words much harder.

However, if you are stuck, the answer is but a click away. Then, I am sure, the words will spring out from the grid for you to find.

The application allows you to input the three words to see if you are right or wrong. Alternatively, you can just find the words and mentally locate them, so long as you don’t cheat!”

Nokia E 90 runs S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 on Symbian 9.2

“It support for Flash Lite 2.0 in the browser which means some flash content is now accessible (e.g. navigation elements) although most video content (such as that found on YouTube) will probably not work. Unfortunately, the implementation could be better, an extra two clicks is required to activate any Flash content.”

Japanese Choose Mobile Phones by Design: MyVoice Communications Survey

I just read this post, very intresting and show how user is emotionally attached with their mobile devices and design really matters. :)

Japanese place the highest emphasis on “design” when choosing a mobile phone, according to a survey by MyVoice Communications, Inc. The company conducted the survey targeting mobile phone and PHS users in January 2007, in which it asked the reason why they chose their current handset models, and 37.9% of all (10,400 respondents) answered “because I liked its design.” “Because I was used to its menu and mode operation” came next at 20.2%, followed by 16.5% responding “because I liked its manufacturer.”

Asked when they purchased their current handsets, “more than 1 year ago” accounted for the most 55.3%, followed by 20.8% responding “in the last 6 to 12 months.” By manufacturer, Sharp won 20.2%, Panasonic Mobile Communications constituted 14.1% and NEC made up 13.9% of all the respondents’ current handsets. The same three companies won the largest shares in the respondents’ previous handsets as well (15.7% by NEC, 14.5% by Sharp and 13.3% by Panasonic).

Asked whether they would want to use a new function that allows current handset settings (such as ring tones, wallpaper, etc.) to be transferred to a new handset, 50% of respondents answered “yes,” indicating that many Japanese mobile phone users would rather continue to use handsets that they are used to than seek the novelty of a new handset.

Ktoon: The $1 Open Source cross platform Adobe FLASH alternative.

ktoon

KToon is a 2D Animation Toolkit designed by animators for animators, focused to the Cartoon Industry. This project is covered by the GPL License using G++, OpenGL and QT as programming resources from KDevelop as the development platform. By now, KToon is only available for Unix systems only

Ktoon is an animation package like Adobe’s Flash. It can even output .swf files and it’s only in .8 beta. The developers are looking for contributions of $1 to help pay for the development costs.

Intresting!

There have been non-Macromedia tools to create SWF since the format was openly published in 1998 via jd/adobe
