Blind Self Portrait

Crazy! FITC speaker Kyle MacDonald along with Matt Mets created a project called Blind Self Portrait which uses computer vision algorithms to build a contour drawing of the visitor, and a moving platform guides their hand to execute the drawing while their eyes are closed.

The Latest Thing in Fast Food: Edible Braille

Wimpy, a restaurant found an interesting way to let visually impaired customers know that they have Braille menus handy in all of their locations. To spread the word they made impressions of Braille messages on hamburger buns, with words spelled out in sesame seeds.
A video promoting the effort shows Wimpy sandwich artisans using tweezers to painstakingly place each individual seed on each bun. The specialized burgers bearing various messages about burger authenticity (“100% pure beef!”) were brought to three Braille institutions for future customers to enjoy.

Awesome idea 🙂

Nokia Braille Reader: SMS for the blind and visually impaired

Nokia Braille Reader gives SMS for the blind and visually impaired. It captures received SMS messages and brings them to the foreground for reading using Braille and tactile feedback.

The application has been developed in a joint project between Nokia, Tampere University and the Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired.

Compatibility:
Nokia devices based on S60 5th Edition, including Nokia N97, 5800 XpressMusic and the newly released N97 mini, 5530, 5230 and X6.

It’s big challenge between new modern technologies and their impact on social life. HOW, WHERE AND FOR? What you think about it?
I am always quite passionate about thinking and like to work on design research to improve our day to day life.

Mobile phone reads text to the blind

K-NFB Reading Technology

Today i found this very intresting news!! a mobile handset which released today is being touted as the smallest text-to-speech device ever created.

K-NFB Reading Technology, a joint venture between the National Federation of the Blind and Kurzweil Technologies, aims to help blind, partially-sighted and people with learning difficulties to ‘read’ text. The software has been designed to work with Nokia’s N82 handset to create the smallest text-to-speech reading device in the world.

The software turns the phone into a pocket-sized reader, enabling users to take a picture of most printed material and have it read back to them.

“Blind users hear the contents of the document read in clear synthetic speech, while users who can see the screen and those with learning disabilities can easily enlarge, read, track and highlight the material.”

“The software makes use of the N82’s large screen and 5-megapixel camera, and combines the best available character-recognition software with text-to-speech conversion technology.”

A communication tool which can enhance life and help to the society, is something which always i am keen to!! rather then just a fashion statement.

Have a look in to the details feature list here.
