Don’t design for “mobile” – design for mobility

Adaptive Path’s Peter Merholz posted an article about “Don’t design for “mobile” – design for mobility”. We really need to understand that the essence of great mobile application design is understanding that a phone is always with you – not that its simply a smaller device.

Some of the points which a developer or designer should consider:

“What we’re realizing is that the key item of concern when designing for mobile is the context in which the device is used. What this means is that discussions of “PC” versus “mobile” are misguided, because we shouldn’t be focusing on the device. We are not designing for mobile — we’re designing for mobility. ”

“A key characteristic of mobility is that the environment around the user is dynamic — they’re walking, driving, on transit, in restaurants, theaters, offices, moving from place to place, context to context. Things around them are constantly changing. ”

It’s true that we’re missing big opportunities when we design for the device, and not for the context in which the device is being used!!

Adobe brings the power of AVM2 (ActionScript 3.0/ECMAScript 4) to mobile devices “likely to be Flash lite 4”

flash lite 4

Great news!! coming from Adobe for contributing a new virtual machine to the open source Mozilla Tamarin project. This new VM – internally called QVM – known to the outside world as Tamarin-Tracing essentially brings the power of AVM2 (ActionScript 3.0/ECMAScript 4) to mobile devices.
So power your imagination to see this as a first step into bringing AS3 Flash content and eventually Flex/MXML to mobile and devices. i must say that its exciting times ahead.

The QVM will likely be what executes Flash Lite 4, the next generation of the Flash mobile spec, allowing full AS3 compliance. In theory, this will enable Flex users to author for devices as well and open up mobile development to an even larger base of Flash developers.

Parts of QVM “tamarin-tracing” are written in the Forth programming language because you are create really efficient VMs in 50K of memory runable on just about any device available today. QVM makes AS3 bytecode execute on a majority of devices that consumers already own and is a key part of the future Flash Player and AIR strategies. The open sourcing of QVM will accelerate our device strategy and allow EcmaScript to scale up and down independent of system resources.

Exciting times ahead 🙂

India’s Mobile Phone Market Fastest Growing in World

Indian mobile user

I just read this intresting thing how mobile is affecting people and even the low income consumers using to increases the business. As India’s mobile phone market has become the fastest growing in the world, with Indians adding nearly six million new connections every month.

Ramu Prasad, 40, has been wheeling his cart loaded with fresh vegetables through a South Delhi residential area every morning for the past 15 years. He has many regular customers, but until recently, he could only do business with them when they were home.
Prasad solved the problem six months ago by purchasing a mobile phone.
Prasad’s customers now place their orders from anywhere, over his mobile, and he delivers the vegetables when they are in the house.

Its great to see how mobile is transofming India’s business.

flash_lite_logo.jpg

Adobe Systems today unveils Flash Lite 3, bringing Flash Player compatible video and Flash-enabled Web site browsing to mobile devices through device manufacturer and application developer partners including Nokia and NTT DoCoMo.

In terms of media capabilities, Flash Lite 3 “brings us as close as ever to the desktop player—effectively one release behind” the desktop version, says Anup Muraka, director, technical marketing, mobile and devices, for Adobe, describing release 3 as “a major upgrade.”

Nokia initially will target Flash Lite 3 to its S60 Smartphone and then to other devices. The partners additionally “have moved to foster the entire ecosystem,” says Christian Buchbauer, alliance director.
