Sony Ericsson adds Flash lite support to mobile Java

Sony Ericsson

A great news for Adobe Flash lite developer, Sony Ericsson today announced at its Developer World conference plans for a new technology that bridges Adobe Flash Lite and Java ME development platforms.

The technology, called Project Capuchin, allows Java ME applications to use Flash Lite as the front-end interface for mobile phone applications.

More importantly, it builds a connection between the phone’s applications and Flash, something that the few phones able to run Flash don’t do. Flash is just a display layer, not actually interactive with the phone!!

“In using Flash, you typically can’t access properties of the phone. But with Capuchin, you can get at information and applications in the phone and use that info with the Flash display,” said Christopher David, director of long-term platform planning at Sony Ericsson

So its a kind of a great tool that wraps that Flash content in a Java file, so it can be used as a Java file.”

Preety cool 🙂

Adobe merges business units serving PCs, mobile

Flash CS3 Professional, Dreamweaver CS3, Fireworks CS3

Adobe Systems Inc said on Monday it was putting under one roof businesses selling software for computers, phones and consumer electronics to make them run on a single technology platform.

The announcement is part of a series of management restructuring moves and represents the further consolidation of its 2005 Macromedia acquisition with the broader Adobe organization while also recognizing the growing convergence of once-distinct software and the need for it to run across a range of devices.

The merging of the different business units may appear on its face to be simply an organizational restructuring, where the Mobile and Devices Business Unit will be folded under Adobe’s Experience and Technology group.

“As the proliferation of digital content continues to accelerate, customers worldwide are looking to Adobe for a platform that enables the creation of rich, engaging experiences across a variety of media and devices,” said Shantanu Narayen, Adobe president and CEO. “Key to delivering a well-integrated technology platform is engineering our desktop and device technologies more closely together. Bringing our mobile and platform businesses together under the leadership of CTO Kevin Lynch better positions us to meet the needs of our increasingly diverse customer base.”

Adobe Flash Player 9 update to destroy and save Web apps!!

flash player 9

Adobe is issuing an update to Flash Player 9 that it hopes will prevent Flash-based Web applications being used to launch attacks against consumers but the update may also stop Flash apps working if developers don’t heed Adobe’s recommendations.

The April update addresses two security flaws in Adobe Flash 9, relating to cross-site scripting (XSS) and DNS rebinding attacks — common techniques used to attack computer systems by exploiting flaws in Web applications.

The update focuses on features in Adobe used by Web developers to communicate with third party servers. Those likely to be affected will be using sockets or XMLSockets; or addRequestHeader or URLRequest.requestHeaders in a network API to access content from sites outside their own domain.
If a site provides access to content on remote domains as a Web service provider, or if it has Flash content in pre-Flash 8 format that communicates with the hosting HTML, then the site could be affected. The update could also impact a site if it uses javascript to communicate outside of a Flash SWF. In all cases, Adobe advises following its recommendations to avoid problems.

Adobe says that the April 2008 Flash Player update will help defend against malicious HTTP headers sent from other domains by performing a cross-domain policy file check before allowing SWFs to send headers to another domain.

Adobe MAX 2008/2009 Cities Announced, again not in India??

 Adobe MAX 2008/2009

Great news!! Adobe MAX 2008/2009 Cities Announced but off course as like as last year or so, again not in India?? Not sure for this reason!! or its not announced yet!!

MAX 2008/2009 will be held in San Francisco, California, Milan, Italy and Tokyo, Japan. MAX is an experience unlike any other, an opportunity to connect with thousands of designers, developers, partners, executives and Adobe staff for education, inspiration, and community.

Few questions if Adobe Max not happening or yet to be announced in India and it will be great if someone from Adobe can give answers:

  • Why no plans for India?, is anything particular?
  • Are we developer/designer are behind the current technologies or current IT scenarios so Adobe don’t think of having a MAX here!!
  • Are we don’t participate in Adobe MAX events. OR is this issue related to money investment? or money per user participation, If Yes!! then why Adobe don’t put a user survey and say how much anyone can pay for??
  • Are great speakers/developers/designers not like to come to India!!

I appreciate if everyone or every Indians can comment here and let’s Join hands to make Adobe to think on MAX event here. Your Views/thoughts/suggestions/ideas anything feel free to write.

On2 Technologies Empowers handsets with new Multi-Format Decoder to offer high performance support for the video used in Adobe Flash Lite 3.

on2 technologies

On2 Technologies, Inc. , a leader in video compression technologies, today announced the release of the Hantro 9100 software multi-decoder. Highly optimized for ARM9 and ARM11 processors, the decoder supports VP6, Sorenson Spark and H.264 in a single package thereby enabling handsets to offer high performance support for the video formats used in Adobe(R) Flash(R) Lite(TM) 3 and Flash(R) Player 9 / Moviestar. Available off-the-shelf, the Hantro 9100 multi-decoder provides manufacturers and service providers with an immediate and cost effective solution to significantly enhance the Flash video experience in mobile phones and other handheld devices.

As a result of the optimizations, the Hantro 9100 multi-decoder improves performance by as much as 100% over the reference codec designs, reducing the power required for video playback, saving battery-life and allowing processor resources to be available for developers to deliver the video experience consumers expect.

“Our Hantro 9100 software multi-decoder overcomes the challenges faced by handset manufacturers to quickly deliver the playback performance needed to make Flash video as compelling on handsets as it is on desktops.” said Bill Joll, President and CEO of On2 Technologies. “Video quality on devices is extremely dependent on optimizations for different processors, and On2 is addressing this across all relevant mobile video formats for the first time.”
